Hi!
Hi!
Fish out of Water, Mondrian : Oil, Jan 2008. The second painting involves the same symbolism but features a different artist of a future era whom I also admire.  In modifying Mondrian’s Composition with Blue, I reprised the role of the waffle cake as a fish out of water, who becomes more daring and active, intentionally removing itself from its place in the watery window of primary blue.  Interrupting the clean, stark space of a black and white grid, the fish is even more exposed and out of place.

Fish out of Water, Cezanne : Oil, Jan 2008. In the first of a 2-part series revisiting self portraiture, I studied the renowned works of Cezanne, a painter I have always admired.  As an aspiring artist, I attempted to recreate a section of Cezanne’s Still Life, as well as incorporate myself into the piece.  While deciding how to juxtapose a self portrait, it only made sense to represent myself as a fish out of water.  However, not just any fish would do: a Korean waffle cake known as buhng-uh bang, traditionally shaped like a fish and filled with sweet red bean, seemed appropriate to reflect not only my heritage but also my weakness for pastry.

Must Try Skydiving : Map and Oil Pastel, Dec 2007.Last summer I jumped out of a plane to face the terror and thrill of skydiving. Perhaps inspired by that unforgettable experience, I later took a true leap of faith: I have recently left a career in engineering to pursue one as an artist, which has always been my sincere ambition. After graduating college and working as an engineer, I realized that the stability and standing of the profession could not make up for my unhappiness and lack of fulfillment. Next year, I am excited to attend the New School in NYC.

Family Portrait : Watercolor & Styrofoam, Dec 2007.My family members are very diverse individuals; our interests and personalities vary widely and we don’t even bear the slightest resemblance to one another.  Despite all our differences, which often lead to squabbles and quarrels, there are instances where we do come together as a family, complement each other, and discover we have more in common with one another than we think.

Still Life : Watercolor, Oct 2007.An assortment of objects painting from observation to study space, depth, and form.

Steel Toes Boots : Charcoal, Nov 2007. One of the most important components of PPE, or personal protective equipment, on a dredge construction site was a pair of OSHA certified steel toed boots.  After working a year in these shoes, they now serve as a record of the hazardous conditions and new experiences I encountered on the job.  As I leave my career as an engineer, I look forward to use whatever I have learned in the past to help my new career as an artist.

Self Portrait I : Graphite, Nov 2007. Self portraiture, one of the most traditional forms of artistic expression, is truly a struggle.  During the process, sometimes you see yourself in the body of your work and experience satisfaction, but often the piece can mock your ability to capture your own essence, or reveal truths about the way you appear, and perceive.  Although difficult and frustrating, this internal exploration translated into a physical exercise has challenged me and helped me improve both my technique and theory.

Dreaming III : Mixed Media, Nov 2007. I have recently realized that the stability and standing of an engineering career could not make up for my unhappiness and lack of fulfillment. Seemingly successful but foundationally unsound, the practical career path collapsed like a house of cards, critically lacking passion.  This collage depicts the dilapidated interior of this house.  Composed on corrugated cardboard, the walls are collaged with bits of a deck of cards and documents from my past experiences, including my new hire contract, pages from a textbook, and a resume.  A pensive self-portrait sits on the windowsill, about to explore the unknown future of a realized dream, but first bidding farewell to the past.
